For this project I recontextualised the narrative of Shakespeare's 'Othello' putting it in the context of 20th Century Mexico at the cusp of Spain's religious and colonial influence on the region. With this reinterpretation I wanted to stay true to the political themes of the narrative and highlight a more modern context where the racist and white supremacist ideas in the narrative could be bought to the surface to make a more explicit commentary. My process involved research into the Native architectural style of the Adobe house, and researching into the history of how European invaders combined their gothic influences with styles native styles to make their ideology more appealing to colonised communities.
My outcomes were: a 3D model of a set concept in the adapted location of Taos Pueblo, a green screen technical plan highlighting the green screen vs built elements of my exterior set, an interior alter concept using a forced perspective built ramp to create a claustrophobic optical illusion also with technical drawing plans, and a character costume concept for Othello inspired by the Spanish priesthood of that era.
